The News…
Tornadoes during a pandemic: Tornadoes ripped across the south, including parts of Louisiana, over the weekend, leveling homes and other buildings.
The governor held a news conference in north Louisiana on Monday after surveying the damage, which he said he was personally shocked by.
U.S. Rep. Ralph Abraham, a Republican who challenged Edwards in the 2019 gubernatorial campaign, joined the Democratic governor for the briefing.
Edwards said he’s been in touch with FEMA leaders and is seeking some waivers in the normal recovery process due to the coronavirus outbreak.
By the numbers: Louisiana continues to see some leveling off of its numbers of people in hospitals with coronavirus and the need for ventilators. About 2,100 people are hospitalized currently with covid-19.
President Donald Trump praised the state for its leveling, noting that a second pop-up hospital that the federal government had planned in Louisiana doesn’t appear to be needed any longer.
But Gov. John Bel Edwards noted Monday that he had seen reports that some people in Louisiana didn't practice social distancing as seriously during the Easter weekend. “I’m asking everyone to do better,” he said.
Coronavirus recovery: Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Monday that he’s going to form an “economic resiliency” task force to help guide the state’s recovery after the coronavirus outbreak.
Details are expected later this week.
